Blizzardboy | A Kiwi in Japan

Blizzardboy | A Kiwi in Japan is the blog of Simon Gibson, a New Zealander living in Tokyo, Japan. Focused on New Zealand, Japan, web design and other shiny things.

Very Very Japanese Country Rock Star

When I first came to Japan I lived in Akita. Everyone there spoke very strange Japanese, but I thought it was normal. And one day someone introduced be to Yoshi Ikuzo who is a “traditional Japanese enka singer” from Aomori (the top-most province of Japan’s main island). His hometown, Kanagi-cho is one of the places Alan Booth visited in his book Looking for the Lost: Journeys Through a Vanishing Japan.

Yoshi’s accent is close to the Akita one, so listening to him was good for my studying.

Here is a video of one of his songs remixed. A classic:

He has quite a sense of humour which makes his music more interesting than most Japanese enka singers, kind of like the Japanese Johnny Cash. I have a Yoshi Ikuzo t-shirt which I was wearing when we arrived in Finland. It says Ikuzo with a big star around it and looks like a heavy metal t-shirt, so this video is very apt. The place we stayed at in Helsinki was over-run by heavy metal fans who were going to a big metal festival. The Ikuzo t-shirt was a great way to make friends…

Thanks to D.Y.E.chan for posting this on mixi!

NEW FREAKDANCE RECORDS SKULL CRACKER T-SHIRTS ARE HERE!

The good-ole Freakdance skull logo has been revamped, reborn and brutally sodomized by label hustler Jere Häkkinen (Luomuhappo) - he has handpainted & re-sketched our company logo by hand and transformed it into a brand new level of fartistical approach!

These brand new Freakdance Records (TM)(C)(R) skull-cracker t-shirts are now internationally available from our webshop in colours such as … well, as Glenn Danzig would put it: “Black, black, The black is back, I am the blackest of the black of time!” - But don’t you worry, in the midst of all this blackness, the beautiful white print on these babies does not only glow in UV light alone, but THESE SHIRTS GLOW IN THE DARK AS WELL! Now how cool is that, you can spook out your acidhead friends in dark rave caves?? HUH ??

Take a look at the shirt here: http://www.freakdancerecords.net/images/fdpaita2_large.jpg

The price is 15 euros a piece and the total print has been limited to 100 copies, so get yours before they disappear from the face of the earth. The shirts are only available for men for the time being, but we will get some models for the ladies very soon! :) Be patient, o’ titted ones! <3

For our Finnish customers / HUOMIO SUOMALAASET PEOPLE!!!: order two CD’s, get the shirt for 10 euros. It doesn’t get any cheaper than that, and if any of you hippie bums still have the nerve to complain about the prices, we’ll hit you in the face with a hammer. Offer valid inside Finland only, sorry.

Our international web shop is at http://www.freakdancerecords.net -> mailorder

If you don’t want one, you can always order one for me for my birthday. It is only 6 months away you know!

6 Soundz 5th Anniversary Party Update

Just a quick update to say that the 6 Dimension Soundz Party this weekend is sold out. I have updated the page on the 6D Soundz website with the timetable for the main stage. There will be no gate sales. So you will have to look forward to next time.

If you have booked and are going - here is how to get to the camp site from the Otsuki Interchange:

It is about 35 kilometers (60 minutes if the road isn’t too busy) from the Otsuki Interchange. At the Otsuki Interchange you want to turn onto Route 20 in the direction of Hachioji. You will travel past Otsuki Railway Station and then come turn left onto Route 139 heading towards Lake Okutama. When you get to Kosuge-mura Village you should see signs for the Camping Ground (玉川キャンプ場). You will then turn right and you will be at the camp ground. If you get to Lake Okutama you have gone too far.

And here is a google map link showing the Tamagawa Camp Ground.
