50 Strange and wonderful things about Japan
Did You Know…
I found this website with the following facts about Japan, but as most of them are a little dated I thought I might tidy them up. Also a couple of them made me a bit angry. Especially number 2.
“You are not in Guatemala now, Dr. Ropata” (obscure? New Zealand soap reference) is a phrase that certainly applies to Japan. Fascinating because it is foreign, the differences inspired one ALT from the Kansai region to compile the following list. I was feeling ever-so-slightly cynical when I wrote the comments.
1.A can of Coca-Cola costs more than one dollar US from a vending machine.
At todays market rates (04/11/06) a can of Coca-Cola will set you back almost exactly US $1.01 (120 yen) from most vending machines. Some only cost 84 cents (100 yen).
2.Japanese people, in general, can’t drive very well.
Which is just like saying that yanks can’t fight (see the Korean, Vietnam, Afghan, Iraq etc. wars). My wife drives damn well in blizzard conditions which would make a Canadian weep into her maple syrup.
