6 down, 2 to go

Six months down and two months left here and boy has the time gone fast. We are starting to plan the next part of our journey. Visas need to be obtained - there are flights to Pakistan from Urumqi so there has been some suggestions that we will be able to get them there, otherwise we will have to send our passports off to Beijing and hope for the best. There is the option of picking up 2 week transit visas in Sust (about 90 Km into Pakistan) which can then be extended in Islamabad, but we don’t really want to have to make the trip down there only to come back to the north again. The Pakistan Tribune has a feature explaining the visa situation in more detail.

When we leave here it will be the May Day holidays, one of the longer public holidays in China, a busy time of year for travelling, but not as busy as the Chinese New Year. Also, most of the Uihgyrs don’t celebrate these holidays - as far as we have seen - so at least Uighyr run businesses will be open for business as usual. We will spend some time in Hotan and then in Kashgar before making the trip over the Karakoram Highway.

In the meantime it is more Uighyr and Chinese study for us. The Uighyr should be useful for when we are in Pakistan and possibly partially useful in Bangladesh as well. The Chinese - useful for going to the convenience store once we are back in Japan!
