Black Sea Bound

The time is almost at hand: we will return to Japan within the month. Still before we do it is to the Black Sea we are heading. Hopefully a week or so of camping in some of the most beautiful country Bulgaria has to offer (so we are told!). That and Choochs birthday which falls this Sunday - and being a gentleman I wont say how old she will be:)

Since the last post we have traveled back down from Sarajevo, spending a couple of nights in Belgrade - known locally as Beograde. Not really long enough there to do it justice, but it seems like an interesting place with its own distinct character. Stumbled on a gallery on the waterfront with an exhibition of rejected advertising projects. Some nicely misguided ideas there. Looking through the visitors book I was surprised that Bruce Sterling had been there only a few days earlier. Civilization indeed.

From Beograd we caught a bus back to Sofia. Got into Sofia around 10 in the morning, and caught the tram. Seems they have a scam going on the trams targeting tourists and we got fined for not punching our tickets fast enough - although we had only just boarded the tram. And Choochs wallet disappeared - either she dropped it or someone swipped it. Welcome to Bulgaria!

We stuck to taxis after that - the kind folks at the Japanese embassy did a great job the next day sorting out things so we could get a report from the local police.

That evening we boarded a bus for the Tchamla Kingdom Festival. Pretty cool on the bus - lots of people from all over the world looking forward to a great party. Sadly the organisers had heaps of problems with transport - so we had no music for the first 2 days, and then on the third night we had music! But only until the generator ran out of petrol around midnight.

We stayed there for 5 nights, met some wonderful people, and enjoyed some terrible food;) all good - I like camping…

(found some pics with us in them here.)

Now we are in Plovdiv - Bulgarias second largest city. The place has a good vibe with lots of cafes on the street and a buried ampitheatre we stumbled across. Would be a nice place to spend some more time. But the beach is calling!

(The photo is from one of my Turkish friends sites - Feodosia Photographers - no USB here, only crappy old windows boxes which crash lots;()
