China admits “shortcomings”
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is currently in New Zealand to sign a range of agreements with the New Zealand government and has surprised many by admitting that China still has shortcomings in the area of human rights. Such comments are a significant step for the Chinese leadership although they haven’t been reported AFAIK in the Chinese press. The full article from the Christchurch Press is below:

China has made a rare admission that its human-rights record has its “shortcomings” and that it still has work to do in providing more freedoms for its people.
