Chinese Communication
People say that the Japanese can be overly pedantic when it comes to organising things. Trips planned down to the last photo opportunity, the last seven minutes for buying souveniers. Sometimes this habit doesn’t seem such a bad thing.
Found out over lunch today - asked one of my students - that we don’t have class on Friday, so the May holiday will be a day longer, and so I will finish work tomorrow with 6 classes. We get quite a few days off like this. Last Wednesday I found out after I had taught my last class that there were no classes Thursday or Friday. I must say that the english teachers I work with aren’t very good at communicating.
When I was teaching in Japan there was a schedule for the month up on a blackboard at the end of the staff room, and provided one could read 2 characters, it was possible to work out well in advance when these breaks were occurring. Of course there was the odd occasion when we were told that we could go home as there was a sports meeting or suchlike, but generally we were kept well informed.
Even this evening, we are supposed to be having a farewell dinner - I assume it will start in about 45 minutes, but where it is I have no idea. My boss sent one of the other teachers a text message with the name of the restaurant in Chinese. I can read the characters, but don’t know where it is. Useful.
