Iron Gate - Tiemen Pass

Well we didnt get to go sightseeing in the desert on the weekend as planned as apparently the leaves aren’t quite golden yet.

So instead we went to the iron gate near Korla which used to be part of the silk road-

quote - from travelguidechina.com

Tiemen Pass (also called Iron Pass or Iron Gate Pass), only 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Korla, lies at the mouth of a 14 kilometer (9 mile) long valley. It was of strategic importance in history in ancient China and is listed as one of the 26 famous Passes. Tiemen was at the throat of the Silk Road and the traffic junction between northern Xinjiang and southern Xinjiang. Nearby, there are still traces of an ancient barracks and military activities. Four Chinese characters are inscribed on the cliff beside the pass. The characters describe the steepness and precipitousness of the pass.

Nearby there are two graves in which a couple that died for love and freedom were buried. Tzuohla, Princess of the ancient Yanqi .The viperous premier tried to kill Tayir. While trying to escape, the couple fell down the gorge.

We climbed the hill, which was a decent way up. didnt bring my camera to work today but will post some photos tomorrow!

There are some photos up here, at my co-worker Michaels blog. They are from about 6 or 7 months ago, but you can at least see some pictures of my boss - who is now officially a poof!

Also we finally got a fridge - secondhand - for about 350RMB $60NZ which was quite a good deal I think. Our company will pay some of the money too. And it will nice to be able to keep veges cool and cook at home more often. Our apartment is starting to feel a little more like home. Of course knowing that we arent going to be here for a very long time means that buying things is a bit of a conundrum.
