In this video, ripped from Japanese TV, a comedian tries to read a couple of sentences in English while some other students get beaten with wooden sticks.
Kind of reminds me of the first time we went to China. We were staying with a friend in Dandong on the North Korean border. With him, his wife and some Chinese friends we watched Kitano Takeshi’s classic Battle Royale. Battle Royale is a movie about a class that goes on a trip to an island and they have a little competition. Each of the students is given a weapon and they have to kill each other. The last student alive wins. Brutal. One of the Chinese guys we watched it with half-jokingly asked us if Japanese schools were really like that!
