Lonely Planet’s Rough Guide to the PSP

A friend of ours, one of the guys I work with here in Korla, recently lent us his copy of the Lonely Planet “Southeast Asia on a shoestring” or rather, what is left of it. Out of the original 900 plus pages there are only about 50 pages left. Our friend travelled from Quebec across the midwest of the United States by bicycle to California, after that he flew to Bangkok. A modern day Jack Kerouac sleeping where he could, living on burgers and beers in small town bars, travelling light.

On arrival in Bangkok he was lucky enough to pick up a copy of the lonely planets guide to southeast asia secondhand. However, having biked across the States he was travelling with a panier bag like this. So with space an issue he ripped out the majority of the book. Which left us with a rather abridged copy.

And what was left was what got me thinking. What about some sort of PDA-like guide book. With wireless. It could update as people update - like wikipedia. The interface would be a simple map which gives more detail as you click in on areas (a use of googlemaps) with little icons down the side for things like restaurants, places to crash, attractions and a language guide. Click on the hotel button and it brings up a list of hotels; it could even learn your budget and pick the closest one - geographically and money-wise. Then it could link to a language section with phrases to help you get the room you want. Funky eh. And you wouldnt have to carry round a 900 page door stop. Travelling light.
