One of the link titles reminds me of a time I asked an American colleague in the newsroom to pass his rubber and he said, “WHAT THE FOCK?” He laughed so hard when it finally dawned on him that I was talking about his “eraser.” To this day, though, I haven’t been able to figure out why he thought I would want a condom at work…

  2. I thought it might have that response in some quarters of the new world. I remember a friend who went on an exchange programme, Rotary if I recall correctly, to the United States, home of the Greenbay Packers. He asked one day in class if anyone had a rubber, and I guess you can imagine the response from a bunch of teenager packer fans. Isn’t language a wonderful thing.
