Random Korla Pictures
There is a new gallery up here with a fairly random collection of pictures taken around Korla over the past month of so.

It is the Chinese New Years Eve here tomorrow, so we will be getting some fireworks this afternoon. Things have been pretty noisy around here with lots of kids letting off firecrackers all over the place. Have also seen people burning fake money on the footpaths around where we live and there are lots of red lanterns hanging around town. The Chinese New Year is a time for new beginnings, here in Korla, as it is throughout the rest of China. Whilst the local Uighyr population don’t celebrate the New Year, they do have time off like their Han cousins. The Chinese have 7 days off in a row at this time of year, making it the longest holiday in the Chinese calender.
Also to mark the new year, many people, especially young people, buy new clothes and get their hair cut. It has been said that it is the best time to take photos of Chinese people beacause of this.
Happy Year of the Dog to you!
