Sandstorm Sweeps Over Xinjiang

Xinhua.net are carrying a story about the sandstorm I mentioned yesterday. It really has been quite amazing here. Last night it was very very windy with some of the lean-to structures on the roof of our apartment building blown off, accompanied by the sound of breaking glass.

The heavy winds continued through the night and this morning when I woke up quite a bit of sand had come through the gap between the window frame and its housing. When I read Abe Kobo’s The Woman in the Dunes I was quite revolted by the life he described, and this morning really reminded me of that.

The sun was a pale white disc this afternoon when we went out to do some shopping. It is still cold for this time of year, but at least the wind has dropped down.
