Survival Chinese

Preparing for our trip to china at the end of the week I put together the following list of useful travel phrases. I used altavista’s babelfish engine to translate them, and if it is anything like the comparable translations of Japanese then who knows how accurate they are. But will give it a whirl!

I am from New Zealand. 我来自新西兰。
I am 30 years old. 我30 岁。
How much to the railway station? 多少对火车站?
That is too expensive. 那是太昂贵的。
I heard the price was 100元。 我听见价格是100元。
You have a nice donkey. 您有一头好的驴。
I am a buddhist monk. 我是一个和尚。
I don’t eat animals, fish, insects, seafood, birds. 我不吃动物, 鱼, 昆虫, 海鲜, 鸟。
One ticket to Beijing please. 一张票向北京请。
What time does the train leave? 什么时候火车离开?
What platform? 什么平台?
You are pretty. 您是俏丽的。
You are ugly. 您是丑恶的。
Can I take your photo? 我可以采取您的相片吗?
Can you take my photo? 您可以采取我的相片吗?
Where is the telephone? 电话在哪里是?
One very cold beer please. 一非常冷的啤酒请。
Would you like a drink? 您要不要饮料?
I don’t understand. 我不了解。
I don’t want to meet your mother. 我不想要遇见您的母亲。
Can you draw me a map? 您可以画我地图吗?

Just had an earthquake here too. Glad we left Tokyo. The earthquake was centered off the coast of Sendai, a 7 on the richter scale. Here in northern Akita, it was a long rolling motion, kind of like being on a ship.

Now we are off to the northern tip of Honshuu. See some lakes and maybe Hokkaido.
