Travel Highlights
Now that we are back in Japan it is time to bring you some of the highlights of our travels.
Greatest Sunrise: Tsarevo, Black Sea Coast, Bulgaria
What a way to celebrate Chooch’s birthday. We ran into a couple of cats we met at the Tchamla Festival and they invited us out for the night, down to a floating bar in Tsarevo’s harbour. A local Bulgarian guy who was also at the party was looking after the bar, and he and his mate spun some wonderful tunes that saw us all the way through to a gorgeous sun rise. The photo above says it all!
Most beautiful scenery: Karakul Lake, Xinjiang China
Compared with the Heavenly Lake, near Urumqi, Karakul Lake remains relatively unspoilt and free from hordes of Chinese tourists. One can stay in yurt here, and enjoy the company of the local Kyrgyz People. The scenery is spectacular with the towering Muztagh Ata mountain in the background.
Best Concept Backpackers / Hostel: Art Hostel, Sophia, Bulgaria
Finally the concept of good design has come to a hostel somewhere in the world. Clean, brightly decorated, Sophia’s Art Hostel is certainly worth staying at if you are in the area. The garden out the back is an excellent chill space while downstairs is a cool little underground space that should become a bar in the not too distant future. Next to the reception is a room used for changing exhibitions.
Choicest Dance Party: Gathering 3, Sarajevo, Bosnia
The other parties on this trip that we went to werent well organised so the Gathering 3 in Sarajevo was a welcome treat for us. Held in the hills above this once war-torn part of the world, it was really cool to be able to get down and party with some really nice people and some cool trax.
There were a lot of other highlights from our travels. Once we get back to Akita, I will sort out the photos, especially of life on the silk road today.
Until next time - shouts!
