Here are some of the Japanese authors I enjoy reading. If you haven’t read these Japanese writers works before, I suggest you check them out. Japan has a pretty unique literary history, one which mixes elements that are intrinsically Japanese with touches of Western inspiration.
Haruki Murakami
The best known of contemporary Japanese writers, Haruki Murakami brings his own special blend of magical realism to the craft of fiction. A very smooth author. Haruki Murakami
Banana Yoshimoto
Banana Yoshimoto is a really enjoyable writer whose works touch on a whole range of issues in a quite remarkable fashion. Fruity!
Sawako Ariyoshi
Born in Wakayama, Sawako Ariyoshi’s life spanned the years 1931 to 1980 and as such reflects the historical development of contemporary Japanese society in a highly engaging manner. Sawako Ariyoshi
Yukio Mishima
More popular at times with Japan aficionado’s than with his own native Japanese, Yukio Mishima embodied a very romantic and highly romanticised vision of Japan in his work.
Miyuki Miyabe
Miyuki Miyabe is a popular contemporary Japanese author active in a number of genres including science fiction, mystery fiction, historical fiction, social commentary, and juvenile fiction. Miyuki Miyabe
